First, my finished painting from the chateau I was lucky enough to stay in during my recent trip to France, and below that, my sketch I painted while there. There were terrific visuals at every turn.

I was a few hours into this painting when I felt like it was a bust. It was static, dull, and way too straightforward. I also know that it's important to push comfort and convention, so, since this was a potential "wiper" I decided to try some things I hadn't done before: blooming lights, pushing the fragile paper, losing edges. I'm feeling like my current paintings are too close to being realistic and it's time for me to move them away from that. Even though this isn't one of my favorites I'm honestly grateful that it was a bit of a fail so I could play with new approaches. Onward.
