A Focus on Light

This is a commission I did for a friend who has a love of ballet; she and I used to dance together as kids. She watches performances at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco. Their chandelier can downright distract you from watching the show.
I realized that painting commissions are a lot more challenging than painting strictly for myself, which is what I normally do. It didn't matter if it made me happy- I was constantly hoping that my client would like it. What if she didn't? This feeling hung over me quite a bit of the time. Still, I love new challenges, and this one gave me some good ones.

More Parisien Rooftops

The next step in this image is to take it even more abstractly and start channeling Diebenkorn into some large, non-representational, and graphic. From my trip almost exactly a year ago with my great friend, botanical artist Catherine Watters.
